Reymond Romero

In Reymond Romero's artwork the thread is in the place of the line. His relationship with this material and its ways dates back to the artisan's heritage from the Venezuelan plains, where he was born, and where his ancestors are from. Romero (Merida, Venezuela, 1979) He transforms the legacy of expert generations in weaving objects such as weighing nets, or quilts, and extends the use of the thread and its constructions into the contemporary art's field.

His relationship with craftsmanship can bring to mind the Victorian William Morris, founder of the Art & Craft movement and a definitive figure in experimenting with textiles and reassessing the mastership legacy. In his case, that legacy brought him close first to confectioning with textiles: interwoven or embroidered cloths which he thought were destined for the fashion field, but which metaphorically were unwoven to allow for the sheer experience of just tensing lines or colored threads.

The starting point of his relationship with the plastic legacy of the great Venezuelan kinetics is the subtle three dimensionality of a material such as a thread, with its almost unperceivable, yet not the least powerful, volumes. Romero speaks about the “volumetrics of color” as in his artwork the chromatic experience contains a tactile suggestion: that unique texture created by the thread. This is the reason why, making a faithful photographic record of the unique character of his work demands for macroscopic planes.

His work maintains a key feature of the Venezuelan kinetic art: That changing experience of colours which moves according to the position of the observer interacting with the piece. But, at the same time, Romero seeks to create a perceptive practice related to the tactile experience which is implicit in the weaving.

In a certain sense, the framework for his pieces is an invisible loom, but, different from traditionally woven schemes, in most of his series the successive lines formed by the colored threads are tensed over the stretcher's frame using only a unidirectional wrapping technique. Even in his Policromias (polychromies) series, comprised by the juxtaposing of horizontal supports, the variation of colours is made maintaining the directional uniformity of the tensed threads. His Monocromias  (monochromatic) suggest volumes from the way the threads are dyed: Color calls for an illusion of elevations above the visual plane.

The complexity of the weave on his Ideogramas (Ideograms) is also the effect at play of several colored threads diagonally tensed. There are strong colour variations in the central zone of his Pictografias (Pictographs) pieces, capturing the observer's eyesight under the illusion of an extended irradiation. The colour of the intertwined threads thus activates an incessant mobility in perception.

The modular structure he has developed in series such as Logogramas allows for variations in the setup of the pieces, which can be mounted at varying distances and therefore interact with the available space, altering the width of the total ensemble in accordance to such space.

Romero has also explored other layups with his Compactos (Compacts), a series of rectangles and squares coated with a thick weave of intertwined monochromatic threads. His fascination for the possibilities of the thread has taken him to completely coating furniture, giving them a new colour threaded skin or manufacturing toys evoking remembrances of the neo-pop, but whose volumes are non other than colored skeins. His work is the most conclusive demonstration that the thread may construe an unexpected material capable of wrapping in textile the universe of geometric abstracts and mundane objects.
