Lucy de la Vega
Lucy de la Vega (Havana, Cuba, 1955) is a self-taught photographer that has explored at will and for the past four decades her snapping passion. Although she embraces the digital age and is grateful for the freedom that technology and digital photography has brought to the scene, she remains quite conservative on her artistic process. The artist considers each photograph taken as a once-in-a-lifetime frame, like in the film epoch she tells us: “Each detail has to be carefully thought of beforehand and I frame each photograph as if I only had one chance to get it right.”
I have been expressing myself through photography ever since I can remember. The camera is an extension of what I see in the world around me and shooting that image that may never be there again. It’s taking what I see and converting it into an art form – the photograph. I try to capture my surroundings or what I see into something tangible to be appreciated, enjoyed and interpreted by the viewer.
My photographs can be abstract, conceptual, documentary, but to me, it's about capturing, structuring and shooting that image that most of us don’t see.
I am a self-taught photographer. A concise expression as to how I feel about photography was stated by Ernst Haas, “The camera doesn’t make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE.”
My work is not about set-up or staging but interpreting. The photographs are not manipulated but a straight shot. My goal is to create that image that will be left behind for us to enjoy.
My inspiration lies in the most common of things in life, the world, and nature.
